This early conversation captures the tone and honesty at the heart of the project.
Did You Kill Anyone Over There? confronts the question veterans are too often asked with a film that refuses easy answers. Through intimate, sit‑down interviews, the documentary explores moral injury, survivor’s guilt, stigma, and the long tail of service—told by those who lived it.
Operation Iraqi Freedom spanned nearly a decade, yet for many Americans it has faded into the background. The stories of those who served remain largely untold outside the veteran community. This film exists to ensure that the human cost of war is not forgotten.
Every day, an average of 22 veterans die by suicide. Behind that staggering statistic are individuals who carried invisible burdens home with them—moral injuries, survivor’s guilt, and the difficulty of reintegrating into a society that often cannot relate to their experiences. By capturing first‑person testimony, this project seeks to build empathy and understanding, while also helping break the silence that too often surrounds veterans’ struggles....
This film is not about glorifying war. It is about showing the daily realities of deployment, the weight of decisions made under fire, and the lifelong impact of service. It is about honesty, memory, and respect—for veterans, their families, and the communities who welcome them home.
Curt Winzenreid enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17 and attended basic training before finishing high school. Two years later, during his first week at Ohio University on an ROTC scholarship, 9/11 set the course for his career. In August 2008, he deployed to Iraq as a First Lieutenant, serving in Tal Afar (FOB Sykes) and Kirkuk (FOB Warrior). He returned home on a human‑remains flight — an experience that still informs his work.
Now based in Pittsburgh with his wife, Nancy, and their two dogs, Curt is focused on honest conversations about service and aftermath. Did You Kill Anyone Over There? continues that mission: listening with respect, remembering what was carried, and bringing veterans’ experiences forward so others can understand the cost.
